CAPITAL WOODCARVERS ANNUAL WOODCARVING SHOW
This year’s show will be held on the third weekend of May: May 19 & 20, 2018, with set-up on Friday, May 18. Each year’s show is held at the Scottish Rite Center at 6151 H Street, Sacramento, CA. The Capital Woodcarvers Association show is the largest show in California. Recently, the shows have included the Gourd Society for an even better carving display.
There will be a change in our judging format this year. Capital Woodcarvers has adapted the California Carving Guild judging, scoring and criteria. Attached below is the CWA Club Show Information letter and the entry application for 2018. There is also a copy of the CCG judging rules. Show entries will be accepted after 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 18 until 7:00 p.m. To begin the judging on time, we would appreciate it if you would bring your entries on Friday, but entries will also be accepted between 7:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 19. *** ALL ENTRIES MUST BE TURNED IN BY 9:00 A.M. In 2014, the show was held on the weekend of May 3 and 4 at the Scottish Rite Center at 6151 H Street, Sacramento, CA. The show theme was: “DISCOVER THE ART OF WOODCARVING – LET US SHOW YOU HOW.” Photos of the 2014 Best of Show entries are shown below:

Free woodcarving classes are given to interested people during the show. More free classes will continue during the summer. If you have questions about future woodcarving classes, please contact our Past President, Phil Shehan.
WHAT HAPPENS AT A WOODCARVING SHOW? Part of the Woodcarving Show is a CARVING COMPETITION. Any carver who wishes may enter a carving in the show competition for judging. There are three carving levels: Novice, Advanced, and Expert, in over 65 different categories. The carver chooses the level they feel they best fit into and then chooses the carving categories for the piece. Each piece is examined by show judges and may be awarded a blue, red, or white ribbon, based on the merit of the piece. All entries are on display during the show regardless of whether an award was given or not. All entries must remain on display until the end of the show at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. The following special awards are also presented, some with cash awards: 1st Best of Show, 2nd Best of Show, 3rd Best of Show, People’s Choice, Caricature Carvers of America, Best Table Display.
SHOW JUDGING. Last year’s show judge was Janet Cordell, a well-known award-winning national carver. Janet is very well known for her face carving, and she also specializes in animal carving.
OTHER SHOW ACTIVITIES. Another set of competitions during the weekend are Whittling Contests on Saturday and Sunday. We also have Silent Auctions of donated prizes, many of them hand-carved. There are also free hourly door prize drawings throughout the weekend. At the end of the day on Sunday is our Grand Raffle Prize drawing. Two wonderful, hand-carved, donated items are to be raffled. Tickets are on sale throughout the show hours and before the show.
Individual carvers have items on display throughout the weekend. Some items are for sale, and many are only for display. ALL ENTRIES MUST STAY ON DISPLAY FOR THE ENTIRE WEEKEND – UNTIL SUNDAY EVENING!!!
We also have a good variety of excellent and well-known vendors from around the country. These vendors supply high quality tools, books, and supplies to our woodcarvers. Some of these vendors include Drake Knives and Moore Roughouts and Wood.
NOTICE: Food will not be available at this year’s Woodcarving Show. We will not have a caterer this year. Please plan accordingly. There will be a refrigerator available to carvers in the kitchen, and coffee for carvers during the day. There are also numerous restaurants and café’s nearby for those who cannot bring prepared food.
